Meta descriptions are the least interesting writing task in documentation and one of the most consequential. They are what a searcher reads before deciding whether to click, and what a link preview shows when someone shares your article in Slack.
They are also the first thing to be skipped, because writing 200 of them is nobody's idea of a good week.
Generate them in bulk
In Toolbox → SEO Metadata you can select articles — filtering to the ones missing a description — and generate descriptions for all of them in a single run. Each is written from the article's own content rather than its title, so it describes what the page actually says.
By default, articles that already have a description are skipped, so you can safely run it across everything without overwriting work you did by hand.
It keeps going when you look away
This is the part that matters on a real knowledge base. Generation runs server-side as a job, not in your browser tab. Navigate to another page, close the tab, or shut the laptop — the run continues, and every description is written as it completes rather than at the end.
Come back later and the job's progress is still there. You can stop a run mid-way and keep everything generated so far.
Where they show up
Your SEO description becomes the page's meta description and its og:description — what a searcher reads under the title, and what a link preview shows when someone drops the article into a chat. SEO titles work the same way.
Each article can also carry a shorter internal summary, used in places like article cards inside your knowledge base. Where an article has no SEO description of its own, that summary stands in, so no page is ever left with nothing.
Write a few by hand first
Generate across the whole knowledge base, then rewrite the ten pages that actually bring you traffic. A meta description is an advert for the page, and your highest-traffic articles are worth a human sentence.
The rest — reference pages, changelogs, the long tail nobody links to — are exactly where generated descriptions earn their keep, because the realistic alternative was leaving them empty.
